Channels in Slack are used to separate messages, discussions and notifications by purpose, department or topic. When you join a Slack Team, you'll be automatically assigned some channels by default. However, your team will also have other channels that you can browse and join.
All users have the ability to create their own Slack Channel. If you create a Slack channel, you assume ownership of that Channel, which includes monitoring the content and inviting users if the Channel is set to private. Unless sensitive information will be exchanged in a channel, it's recommend all channels be public instead of private. New users can search and join any public channel themselves, so it releases the administrator of that channel from needing to send invites.
How do I join a Slack Channel?
Click the Channels header on the left sidebar, which will open the Channels browser window. From there, you can select additional Channels you'd like to join.
There are 2 kinds of Channels, public and private. Only public Channels will appear in the Channels browser. If you know you need access to a private Channel, you'll need to be invited by someone already in the Channel.
