Setting Up and Using Email Aliases in G Suite

What are email aliases and how do they work in G Suite?

An email alias is simply a forwarding address that points to a user's existing email account. Mail sent to your primary address, and any email aliases you add, all appear in your inbox.

By default, your account that ends in @sparcsf.org is your primary email account. It's also the account you use to log into G Suite. G Suite automatically adds @sparc.co as an alias to every account. For example, jackherer@sparcsf.org automatically has jackherer@sparc.co as an alias.

Mail sent to either address arrives at Mr. Jack Herer's same inbox.

We also own a series of secondary domains (@marigold.ca, @farmdirect.org, @besito.la etc...) that can be used to create additional aliases. Reach out to ithelp@sparc.co to set up an alias using one of these secondary accounts.

You can use email aliases to send and receive mail only. You must keep using your primary address to sign into you G Suite account, send Calendar invitations, sync with a mobile device, or share Google Docs and Sites.

Sending mail from aliases

Creating an email alias lets you receive email at that address. To send mail with the alias address in the From field, you need to set up a custom From address in Gmail.

  1. Open Gmail. In the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  2. Click the Accounts tab.
  3. In the "Send mail as" section, click Add another email address.
  4. Enter the name of your email alias you want to send from
  5. Leave “Treat as an alias” checked
  6. Click Next Step.
  7. If you want your alias to be your default account: In the "Send mail as" section to the right of the address, click make default.

Setting up additional aliases

Submit a support ticket to set up additional aliases. Keep in mind that every alias you set up with @sparcsf.org as the domain will automatically get a @sparc.co alias as well.

Within 24 hours (and often sooner), you will begin to receive email sent to the new address.
